West Philadelphia sits at the far west end of the city. The district is extremely residential in nature and enjoys great access to adjacent job centers, institutions, and resources, via numerous transit connections.

Top planning issues:

  • The West district is predominantly residential in character and is lacking in major job centers.

  • Existing row homes are affordable for young families and there is a large area of new housing in Mill Creek.

  • The high vacancy rate of homes and parcels contributes to crime problems, disinvestment and a lack of home equity.

  • Commercial corridors are generally under-performing in comparison with the rest of the City. This means that residents have to travel further to get what they need, or settle for lower quality products and services.

Implementation PROGRESS

District Plans include a wide range of recommendations. Some can be acted upon quickly, while others require additional resources or policy changes, or further planning.
